Franchising is a concept that fits very well to the framework conditions of social firms and other social companies. In those areas where they are especially good – in leading the personnel and motivation of the employees – franchising is based on the commitment and the competence of the local responsibles. In those areas where they have weaknesses – in marketing, sales and controlling – it offers professional support from outside.
The potential of the system of franchising are supposed to be of use for social firms and for other social companies.
Creation of a counselling structure with a centre of competence for franchising that offers con-tinous counselling, training and support for social firms and other social companies.
Development of a basis package with fundamental information and tips for possible franchisees.
Subject of the counselling and the basis package are the central organisational structures and fields of action of franchising:
In the framework of this project especially those responsibles and decision makers are qualified who want to create jobs for severely disabled people and people who are disadvantaged on the labour market by founding a social firm or another social company.
The project partner is the Bundesarbeitsgemeinschaft Integrationsfirmen (BAG), a group of social firms in Germany. It supports their members, offers them advice and represents them on the politi-cal level.

The proliferation of the results leads to new jobs and to the improvement of quality in existing companies.

Jobs for people with a disability are provided by currently more than 30 CAP-supermarkets in the framework of a franchise system. They are a centre, where daily products can be bought. Many of the CAP-supermarkets are at locations where the urban supply and infrastructure have become deserted.
Most of the employees in the CAP-supermarkets have no specific education or qualification. The low specialisation is a competitive disadvantage that endangers the competitiveness and the work places of the companies.
Therefore the aims of the project are:
Development, testing and documentation of model counselling and promotion concepts as well as practical qualification modules. By transfer activities they are placed at the disposal of other protagonists.
The qualification of the employees in the framework of the project is made through a combination of
Genossenschaft der Werkstätten für Behinderte (GdW WfB). The GdW WfB is a group of companies with disabled employees. Its aim is to sustainably secure the jobs for persons with a disability and to shape them in a future oriented way. It has developped the first and so far only franchise chain in the area of social firms – the CAP-supermarkets.

Minor wood consists of non-sortable wood remainders. As they are of no economic use, very often they are not used, but remain in the forests and rot. But minor wood can also be used in a sensible way – for example for the construction of buildings or for wooden floor covering. The Neue Arbeit Stuttgart gGmbH developped such a wood construction system together with architects and the Frauenhofer Institut and took out a patent for it.
The aims of the project are:
In the framework of the project
Before the realisation of the qualification module and the training, they are tested by a pilot group. The Neue Arbeit gGmbH is the project partner. In about 20 projects it offers 800 disadvantaged employees the possibility to find their way back to work life.

Hotels and restaurants are pioneers in the development of business concepts for dis-abled/disadvantaged people. More than 30 social firms in this sector offer foremost jobs for per-sons with a disability. Furthermore most of these firms are fitted without barriers. The Stadthausho-tel Hamburg plays a special role as first social hotel in Germany.
Most of the traditional hotels and conference locations only pay little account to the special re-quirements of persons with a limited mobility. But many tour operators wish to acquire more guests out of this target group. As some hotels and conference locations are no interesting part-ners, social firms shall be brought together in the framework of this project in order to have a bet-ter position on the market.
For marketing and qualification measures concepts and tools are developped together, they are tested as pilot project and are then available. As a second step products are to be developped and to be offered in cooperation with big tour operators.

Bio-Catering Marbachshöhe GmbH produces 100 % organic food. The food is prepared in a central kitchen – the decentralised and flexible distribution offers a high potential for new jobs for persons with a disability.
Modern technological procedures and intelligent logistics are the prerequisites for a high quality product that is very well accepted by the customers due to its uniqueness in the region. Thanks to the modern production the food is only little strained by temperatures and can easily be regener-ated and distributed before consumption. The aim of the project is to enlarge the gastronomic offer and to thereby create further jobs for persons with a disability, to qualify them and to support the founding of further social firms in the organic food sector. Elements of systematic gastronomy shall create decentralised final production and independent distribution of food, where persons with a disability have an interesting and responsible job.

for the care of vegetation plants, outside works, winter services, cleaning of buildings, caretaker services / handicraft services and the administration of buildings offers interesting jobs for persons with a disability. The social firm mig gGmbH developped innovative regional concepts in important segments of facility management, acquired competences and succesfully created jobs and appren-ticeships.
The markets change with growing speed – also in the segment of facility management. Securing the markets urges the social firms to be part of this change and to shape it. But a single social firm is not able to comply with the increasing requirements of the market like for example: globalised organisational structures, supraregional offers, standardised service packages and complex systems of controlling.
In the long term the social firms can only cope with these requirements of the market through common organisations. For the strategic use of the potentials in facility management common profiles of performance, controlling and education are thus developped in the framework of the project.
